Carl Dean, the longtime husband of legendary country music singer-songwriter Dolly Parton, passed away on Monday at the age of 82. Dean, who was known for his private nature throughout their nearly 60-year marriage, died in Nashville, Tennessee.
Parton took to social media to share a heartfelt statement, expressing her deep love and gratitude for the time they spent together. “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy,” she wrote.
The couple’s love story began when Parton, then an 18-year-old aspiring singer, met Dean outside a laundromat on her first day in Nashville. Two years later, they tied the knot in a private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia, on May 30, 1966.
Throughout their marriage, Dean remained out of the public eye, focusing on his asphalt-paving business in Nashville. However, he continued to inspire Parton’s work, including her classic hit “Jolene,” which was written about a bank teller who had a crush on Dean.
Parton and Dean’s relationship was a mystery to many, with some even speculating that Dean didn’t exist. However, Parton joked about the rumors, saying, “A lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me.”
The couple had no children together, but Dean is survived by his siblings, Sandra and Donnie, according to Parton’s statement.
