EmpowerNet: FUL VC Advocates for Women’s Empowerment in Civil Service through Internet Skills Development

The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, has urged government, international organizations, and employers of labor to empower women in civil service with computer and internet skills.

Akinwumi made the call in Lokoja, Kogi State, at the opening ceremony of a three-day training workshop called ‘EmpowerNet: Secure-Connect-Strive for Kogi Women in Civil Service’, organized by US Exchange Alumni, Kogi State chapter.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that computer literacy is not just a skill but a gateway to economic independence, professional growth, and social empowerment, noting that, the training would help to tackle internet fraud and other sharp practices in the country.

He further explained that equipping women with the tools and knowledge to navigate the digital landscape would dismantle the barriers that have historically limited their participation in the workforce.

Through this kind of program, he said, Nigeria would be participating in building a more equitable future where opportunities and success are determined by merit rather than gender.

While stresing that the training workshop came at an auspicious time given the dynamics of today’s digital and competitive age., he commended the state chapter under the leadership of its head, Prof. Joseph Abel for doing a great job in making the event a reality.

Earlier in his remarks, the state chapter Chairman, US Exchange Alumni, Prof. Joseph Abel, said the training is aimed at equipping participants with practical knowledge on the use of computers, information management, fraud prevention and email communication for women civil servants drawn from different ministries and agencies, including the civil defence.

Earlier in his opening remark, the state chapter chairman, US Exchange Alumni, Prof. Joseph Abel highlighted the importance of empowering women in the civil service. She stated that women play a critical role in the development of any society, and that their contributions should be recognized and appreciated.

Prof. Joseph, noted that the training is aimed at equipping participants with practical knowledge on the use of computers, information management, fraud prevention and email communication for women civil servants drawn from different ministries and agencies, including the civil defence.

He further emphasized the need for women to be assertive and confident in their roles. She also urged them to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the workshop to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Prof. Joseph expressed their commitment to continue providing opportunities for capacity building and empowerment for women in the civil service.

The Lead Facilitator and Director of Federal University Lokoja ICT Centre, Mr. Peter Akin Tokunbo, explained that although some of the women already have knowledge of the use of computers, the training would help them to use the computer and the internet safely.

The training would also equip participants with practical knowledge on the use of computers, information management, fraud prevention, and email communication for women civil servants drawn from different ministries and agencies, including the civil defense.

Akinwumi reiterated the need for employers of labor to improve the welfare of women in the civil service, given the harsh economic reality in Nigeria.

He added that, women are nation builders who should always be treated nicely, looking at their numerous contributions to family, society, and national development. It is hoped that this workshop will further the participants’ capacities and empower them to unlock their full potential in their homes, workplaces, and the world at large.

The training workshop was well received by participants, who expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn and network with other female civil servants.

They also commended the organizers for putting together such a comprehensive and impactful program.

At the end of the three-day training, participants were presented with certificates of completion, and encouraged to apply the knowledge and skills gained to their work.
