In a significant move to promote girls’ education, the Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE).
This World Bank-supported project aims to improve secondary education opportunities for adolescent girls in Nigeria.
Commissioner for Education, Mr. Wemi Jones, reiterated the government’s full support for AGILE during an inception face-to-face workshop with stakeholders in Lokoja.
He emphasized that the implementation of AGILE will equip girls with life-coping skills, enabling them to navigate the challenges they face.
The AGILE program focuses on enhancing school infrastructure, providing scholarships, equipping girls with life skills and vocational training, and promoting computer literacy, ultimately targeting 21,634 students across the state.
Dr. Abdulhakeem Bello, AGILE Programme Coordinator, highlighted the initiative’s objectives, noting that 2,500 girls will receive training in computer literacy.
The program will also incorporate out-of-school girls and boys to ensure inclusivity.
Mr. Steve Tsado, Lead Project Coordinator of the New Initiative for Social Development (NISD), stressed the importance of technical support for AGILE’s effective implementation.
He described the intervention as timely and urged stakeholders to fully engage with the program to maximize its impact.
During the workshop, participants engaged in interactive discussions with relevant agencies and key personalities, fostering collaboration and enhancing understanding of AGILE’s objectives.
The Kogi State Government’s commitment to AGILE demonstrates its dedication to empowering girls through education.
By providing safe spaces and opportunities for growth, the government aims to create a brighter future for its young girls.
