NYCN Kogi Chapter, Advocates for Peaceful, Transparent Elections
In anticipation of the upcoming gubernatorial elections on November 11th, 2023, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Kogi State Chapter, has emphasized the critical need for a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process.
Acknowledging the significance of these elections, the State NYCN Chairman, Amb. Usman Ogohi calls on all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and ensure the well-being of the nation.
Highlighting the economic challenges faced by a considerable portion of the populace, the NYCN chairman urges privileged individuals to empathize with fellow citizens. The elections, they say, present an opportunity to elect leaders committed to serving with integrity, accountability, and a sense of duty.
According to him, he said the NYCN, Kogi State Chapter, aligns with the call for peace and issues specific demands to various stakeholders:
1. Implores the Federal and Kogi State Governments, alongside relevant agencies, to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections, minimizing post-election disputes.
2. Calls on registered voters to exercise their constitutional rights without fear or favor and resist attempts to compromise their conscience.
3. Reminds the political class and candidates of their responsibility in strengthening democratic culture through lawful conduct, non-violence, and the maintenance of peace.
4. Urges the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold its statutory mandate, ensuring a flawless election and reassuring the integrity of the electoral process.
5. Calls on security agencies to ensure peaceful movement, prevent disruptions or attacks based on ethnicity, religion, or party affiliations, and address reported instances of insecurity and violence.
The NYCN also appeals to traditional rulers and religious leaders to play a pivotal role in fostering a conducive environment for the elections within their domains.
He further stressed that the NYCN urges all Nigerians to pray for guidance in electing leaders imbued with vision, wisdom, courage, compassion, and the fear of God. The call is for collective efforts towards good governance, enabling states to reach their full potential and contribute to the greater glory of the nation.
