The President and Founder of Rehoboth Harris Help Foundation, Mrs. Rebecca Ocheni, has called on farmers living in flood-prone areas to adopt irrigation farming.
She made the call during a program organized by her organization to provide farming aids to women and breastfeeding farmers in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The foundation, which was established in October 2023, aims to provide critical support and resources to women farmers and breastfeeding mothers.
According to Mrs. Ocheni, the idea for the NGO was born out of the devastating 2012 flood in Kogi State, which left many homeless and struggling to rebuild their lives.
The foundation’s initiatives include sensitization programs to educate farmers on the dangers of floods and how to protect themselves and their farms.
The organization also advises farmers to adopt irrigation farming practices, which enable them to plant and harvest crops before the rainy season, reducing the risk of flood damage.
As part of its efforts to empower farmers, the foundation provided 150 farmers with some water pumping machines to facilitate irrigation farming, as well as cash support for mobility.
The program, which took place in Ede-Adejoh, a sub-community in Idah Local Government Area, aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices and support vulnerable communities.
By adopting flood-resilient practices such as irrigation farming, farmers can minimize the damage caused by floods and ensure a more stable and sustainable agricultural system.
The foundation’s efforts are geared towards building a more resilient and food-secure future for all.
Elder Attai Adegbe, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to the NGO, describing the intervention as timely. He thanked them for their support and assistance, pledging to maintain and utilize the equipment effectively.
