Engr. Umahi and lawmakers-elect made their stand known when Abbas and his campaign team paid a courtesy call on them in Abuja on Friday.
Umahi said their decision is based on among other things Abbas’ antecedent and leadership qualities.
Dr. Abbas is being described as humble, intelligent, focused, hard working and unifier.
Dr. Tajudeen Abbas who is currently the Chairman, House Committee on Land Transport, represents Zaria Federal Constituency of Kaduna State.
He sponsored 75 bills in the 9th National Assembly out of which President Muhammadu Buhari had assented to 21. The number of bills Abbas sponsored is believed to be the highest number of bills a member could sponsor in the history of Nigerian parliament.
There are also reports that the leadership of the All Progressive Congress and President-elect, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu have adopted Abbas as preferred candidate for the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
According to sources the decision was taken last Friday May 5 at the Defence House, Abuja.
Advocates of zoning of Speakership position to the North West Geo-political Zone where Abbas hails from, argued that the zone produced the highest votes for the election of Tinubu.
They also maintained that the North East had gotten the position of Vice President while APC National Chairman is from the North Central.
