Prof. Olubunmi Fadipe-Joseph, of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Ilorin has submitted that women and girls who study Mathematics are faced with gender based violence and social stigma.
Fadipe-Joseph made the submission in Ilorin, during her paper presentation at the 240th Inaugural Lecture of the University entitled: Mathematics For All”.
The don who teaches in the Faculty of Physical Sciences of the University observed that there are girls who love Mathematics but face myriad of challenges.
According to her, the belief of the society is that Mathematics is for men, and this has affected the study of the subject in Africa.
“All over the world and especially in Africa, women in Mathematics are very few. If we will see further, we must stand on the shoulders of those who have gone ahead of us.
“That is why the place of mentoring cannot be over emphasised. Knowledge is continuous and cumulative and it is only by learning from great minds that one can contribute meaningfully and become an icon, a reputable and dignify personality tomorrow,” she said.
The Mathematician pointed out that girls who have interest in the subject have challenges of lack of mentors, lack of esteem and funding among others.
She advocated for children to be engaged in arithmetic at the elementary level, Mathematics clubs, quiz competitions and talks which could be organised more frequently in schools.
“These will give girls opportunities to build their confidence in mathematics. Government, parents and teachers should provide a conducive environment for girls,” she said.
Fadipe-Joseph further disclosed that she has been active in promoting and rewarding outstanding girls-mathematicians with prizes, to further their ambition in studying the subjects.
She therefore advocated for well meaning individuals and institutions to also evolve strategies to promoting study of mathematics in the girl-child.
She therefore advocated regular talks on how to choose a mentor and how to balance career and family are necessary. With determination women can manage career, work and family life by proper planning of time.
“There should be age benefit for women with children when applying for any support.
“This will also give women the opportunity of interacting with other women in Mathematics,” she appealed. (NAN)
